I will share a couple of them. One is before I met her. The other has been since I have been with her.brbrMy wife is American born as I am. She was born in California, but moved to Georgia with her mom, stepdad, and younger brother when she was 10 in the hopes of having a better life and obtaining the American dream of owning their home. At the age of 14 she just ended middle school to begin high school. Her mother at the age of 41 was diagnosed with emphysema, which is terminal. The doctors told my wife and her family that her mom wouldnât live more than 2 years without a lung transplant. At first her mom was doing ok without needing around the clock care or oxygen therapy to help her breath. A year later her mom became very ill and was put into the ICU at the hospital on a life support machine. Her mom had pneumonia. Thank God her mother only spent 4 days in ICU and recovered and was able to come home after a few extra days. Suddenly, her mother needed oxygen therapy 247 and couldnât walk or move as fast as she could before. From there she gradually went down hill. It came to the point her mother couldnât be left alone for any long period of time and could no longer work either. My wife made the hard decision to quit school to stay at home with her mom during the day while her stepdad worked and brother stayed in school. Her mom needed a home nurse, but money was tight and they couldnât afford it. My wife was her home nurse at 15 years old. In the evenings when her stepdad came home from work and brother was home from school, my wife went to work full time and would work over time whenever possible to help to support the family. By this time the transplant doctor refused to give her mother a lung transplant that would extend her life past the estimated 2 years. It was extremely difficult for my wife and her family to get that news. Now, it was left up to her mom as to how long she was going to fight to live with the family helping to take care of her. Her life was going to end at some point in the distant future, it was a matter of time. They watched her mother suffer and slowly die every day not sure of the day that she would finally pass away. Over the next four years, my wife continued caring for her mother during the day and working at night. Her mother was still alive after several more trips to the ICU and being put on life support.
